The Shoebox program is broadcast from the bank vault at CJSR on the University of Alberta Campus. Radio is a historic medium, which allows us to listen to music and news. The history of the radio goes back to Nikola Telsa's research into the development of radio in 1891 to Guglinlmo Marconi's patent for a radio in 1896. The first radio broadcast started on November 6, 1919 in The Hague, Neatherlands. CFCF in Montreal began the first regular broadcast in Canada in January 1922 on the AM band. The first FM stations started in 1939 with stereo sounds added in the late 1950's.
The radio was instrumental in the birth and advancement of the roots of Rock n Roll, Jazz, Blues and Country Music. The radio also led to the birth of Rock n Roll and its evolution to the advancement of Rock n Roll in the 21st Century.
Check out some of the radios that have been played since 1922. Also check out the radio dials on each page of the Shoebox radio website, they were used to tune in radio stations all over the world. Long live the radio!
